Time Is on Our Side

Time Is on Our Side

The question everyone asks

Every investor conversation this year ends with the same question: when? We don't know the date. Nobody does. So we have stopped treating "when" as the important question.

The better question is who waiting works for. An owner with debt pays interest every month he waits, and one bad month can force him to sell. An owner with no debt pays nothing to wait, and the machine keeps paying him while he does.

Since last October, markets have lived through a government shutdown, a war in February and now a spike in bond yields. None of it started inside Ethereum. All of it tested patience. This letter is the math behind why patience can be on the owner's side.

The textbook isn't working

Most of what investors were taught assumes the market behaves the way it did when the textbooks were written. This market doesn't.

Rates up, stocks down. Bond yields have spiked this year. The S&P 500 set a new record on October 6 anyway.

Bonds protect you when stocks get risky. Government debt is called "risk-free." The U.S. government passed $40 trillion of debt in August, five months after it passed $39 trillion. Risk-free is a label, not a fact.

Spread your money widely and you're diversified. The 25 largest stocks are now about 52% of the S&P 500. Own an index fund and you mostly own a handful of AI-driven companies. Even inside that group the results are lopsided: Sandisk is up several hundred percent this year, while Microsoft has trailed.

The hedge was supposed to be bonds. This year the hedge was oil, and it worked because of a war. A gain that depends on a war continuing is a gain that ends with the war. After the Russia-Ukraine war, the oil war premium peaked near $47 a barrel in 2022 and was largely gone by the end of 2025.

When in doubt, own gold. When people stop trusting government debt, the old answer is gold. Central banks have been buying it at a record pace, and it still fell about 25% from its January high near $5,600 to roughly $4,170 today. Gold protects what you have. It doesn't pay you to wait.

So concentration isn't a choice we make to be different. It's where the math leads. If you want an asset that is well below its all-time high, whose usage is growing, and that has a federal rulebook starting in January 2027, that is a short list. We think Ethereum is at the top of it.

No debt means no forced seller

An owner who borrows hands the timing to a lender. An owner who doesn't keeps it. Here is how four common ways to own Ethereum line up on that one fact.

Four common ways to own Ethereum
Holding
What it is
Debt
ETH
A commodity, the fuel of the Ethereum network
None. A commodity has no lender.
ETHA
iShares fund that holds ETH
None. The fund holds ETH; it does not borrow to buy it.
BitMine (BMNR)
Public company holding ~6.03 million ETH as of October 2026
None reported. Management says it has no debt covenants or restrictions.
SharpLink (SBET)
Public company holding ~889,000 ETH as of August 2026
No meaningful borrowings reported.

In every market panic we have lived through, the people who lost the most were not wrong about the asset. They were forced to sell it at the bottom to pay someone back. A holder with no debt cannot be forced. ETH fell below $2,000 earlier this year, and BitMine kept buying instead of selling, because no lender could call the loan.

No debt also means waiting has no carrying cost. There is no interest clock running against the owner.

The machine pays you to wait

Staked ETH earns new ETH every day, so the number of coins owned grows while the price does whatever it does. BitMine reported a recent annualized staking yield of about 2.7%, and it stakes about 85% of its ETH.

Here is what 2.7% does to 1,000 staked ETH if it compounds, with no new money added:

The point is not the size of the yield. The point is direction: every year an owner waits, he owns more of the asset, not less. A borrower's position shrinks with time because interest eats it.

The yield moves with network conditions and is not guaranteed; a current Ethereum proposal (EIP-8361) would lower it as more ETH gets staked. ETHA itself does not stake; BlackRock offers staking through a separate fund.

Why ETH moves fast when it moves

ETH is small and its supply is tight, so the same dollar of new buying moves it far more than it moves a large stock. That is why its rallies look sudden.

About one ETH in three is staked and not for sale, and BitMine alone holds about 4.9% of the supply. Buyers compete for what is left. Speed works in both directions:

Owners who sold in the quiet stretches missed the fast climbs. Owners who never took anything off at the top gave back the whole gain, and more, within months.

The worst case, already tested

Every holding has to pass a worst-case test, and we do not have to imagine one. From August 2025 to June 2026, ETH fell from about $4,950 to about $1,600, roughly −68%. That happened in today's market: spot ETFs, public ETH treasury companies, the GENIUS Act signed into law and ETH treated as a commodity. This is not a forecast that it repeats.

The worst case, already tested
Holding
What happened in the decline
What held
ETH (staked)
Price fell with the market
Coin count kept growing; no one could force a sale
ETHA
Tracked ETH down
No borrowing; the fund was never a forced seller
BMNR
Stock fell about 88% from its July 2025 peak, more than ETH
No debt; kept buying and staking ETH instead of selling
SBET
Stock fell more than ETH
No meaningful debt; kept staking and buying back shares

Two things the test shows plainly. First, the stocks can fall harder than ETH when the market stops paying a premium for them. Second, the holding was never the forced seller, but an owner could be. No debt protects the position; it cannot protect an investor who needs the cash in the middle of a decline. That is why the test has to pass for each investor, not just for the asset.

Traffic is not a timer

If you can measure Ethereum's traffic, and big institutions keep moving on-chain, when does the price follow? Traffic headlines do not set a date, because two things are happening at once.

  1. Usage is going up. In January 2026, Ethereum's seven-day average hit nearly 2.5 million transactions a day, about double a year earlier. Stablecoins make up roughly 35–40% of that traffic.
  2. The cost of each transaction is going down. The same month, the average fee fell to about $0.15. Network upgrades are built to do exactly that: carry more traffic for less.

More traffic at a lower price per trip is how a highway gets built out. It is good for the network, but it does not translate straight into price on a schedule anyone can predict.

The GENIUS Act is the same kind of story. It takes effect on January 18, 2027, and gives U.S. stablecoins their first federal rulebook. It is a starting line, not a finish line: issuers, banks and payment companies build on it over years, and a large share of today's stablecoin traffic already runs on Ethereum.

What a patient owner watches

One rule from almost forty years in markets: do not sell good investments at bad prices when the thesis is intact. It held through 9/11, 2008, COVID, the tariff shock and this Ethereum bear market.

That rule only works for an owner who cannot be forced to sell. That is why the no-debt point matters more than any forecast. We do not need to know when. We need to still own it when it happens.

So instead of watching a price, we watch the machine:

  • Debt: do ETH, ETHA, BMNR and SBET stay free of borrowing?
  • ETH per share: are BitMine and SharpLink adding ETH behind each share?
  • Staking: is the share of ETH locked up holding or rising?
  • Usage: are transactions and stablecoin activity on Ethereum growing?
  • Rules: is the GENIUS Act rulebook on track for January 18, 2027?

As long as those keep pointing the right way, time is working for the patient owner.
